The Cat Language Bible – Reviewed

One of the hardest things about having a cat is not understanding what they are thinking and feeling.

Not being able to interpret your cat’s behaviour can make it difficult to bond with them, attend to their needs and keep them happy.

The Cat Language Bible was created by Jonas Jurgella to help cat owners figure out what their cat is thinking.

We read the book to find out if it lives up to its claim of helping readers “speak cat”, here’s what we thought:

First Impressions

The first thing we noticed is the wide range of topics the book covers, it is packed with interesting information and this helps to give cat owners a more comprehensive understanding of their feline friend.

The book thoroughly explains the cat communication basics (body language, facial expressions, and vocalisations).

As you continue through the chapters it builds on this strong foundation by looking at a range of specific behaviours and what they mean, this also includes unwanted behaviours and how to correct them.

Easy To Read

Although there is a lot of information, it is not overwhelming or boring.

Each section is easy to follow and is detailed enough that you can immediately apply what you have learned so far.

You don’t need to finish the book from cover to cover to start understanding your cat.

With that said, each chapter helps to build on your understanding so you can continue to interpret your cat’s behaviour better.

This progression is one of the main reasons we didn’t want to put the book down.

What We Liked

We loved that the posture and facial expression chapters not only describe the body language but also show you using pictures and drawings so you know exactly what to look out for in your cat.

This makes it a lot easier to see even slight variations in your cat’s body language and understand the different meanings.

Another aspect we appreciated is that The Cat Language Bible isn’t just about you understanding what your cat is communicating but also helps you communicate more effectively with them too.

It gives useful tips on how to show affection to your cat and how to respond to their behaviour.

All of this information helps you to build a strong bond with your cat.

Something else that is useful for the reader is how the book is sectioned.

The chapters and well-defined sub-sections make it easy to return to certain parts when needed.

This is the kind of book you will find yourself returning to time and time again as you notice different behaviours in your cat, for example, you may want to go back and read the vocalisation pages again if you start experiencing night meowing.

What Could’ve Been Better

The Cat Language Bible has a section on vocalisations and what your cat is trying to communicate to you.

With so much detail and information in the body language section, it was a little bit disappointing that there wasn’t more explanation in the vocalisation part.

The information about the different vocalisations is interesting but having them clearly defined (or even being able to hear them through links or sound bites) would help to differentiate between each of them and avoid confusion.

With that said, the vocalisation section does provide a great starting point and with time owners would be able to start deciphering the different vocalisations of their cat.

One other thing that could’ve been better was that we felt there was some filler information which didn’t do much more than bulk the book out.

This is pretty normal for a guide like this so some sections felt a bit “slower” to get through but overall the information is very valuable.

Who’s The Cat Language Bible For?

The Cat Language Bible is ideal for new cat owners or owners who feel like they are struggling to understand and communicate with their cats.

It will help anyone who wants to strengthen their bond with their cat as it gives owners the tools needed to interact with their cat in a positive way.

For experienced cat owners, there’s probably not too much new information in this book.

However, as mentioned, we particularly like the section on understanding body language and this is something that could benefit all cat owners.

There are definitely parts that experienced cat owners will find helpful but a large part of the book may simply be reaffirming what is already known.

For us, the value of the information and having it all available in one book makes it a worthwhile read.

The Cat Language Bible can also be a fantastic resource if you are thinking about introducing a second cat into your home.

There is a section which looks at feline-feline behaviour, hierarchy and dynamics which can help you figure out if getting another cat is the best thing for your situation.

There is also practical advice on how to carefully introduce cats to each other

In Conclusion

The Cat Language Bible is interesting, gives well-explained examples, and covers all the key aspects of cat communication so whether you want to better understand your cat’s body language or you need some advice on how to handle certain behaviours such as litter box issues or biting, all the information is in this one book.

This is a great book to have on hand as a reference so when you observe certain behaviours that you aren’t sure about you can check the book and find out what your cat is trying to communicate.

The guide is simple, effective and is a worthwhile read for cat owners and cat lovers

By the end of the book, we felt like we have a better understanding of what cats are thinking based on their body language and behaviour.

We have no doubt that this understanding will help many cat owners improve their relationships with their cats.
