Cats and riddles have many things in common; they can both be perplexing, curious and fun!

It seems apt then that we combine the two with a selection of hand-picked feline-related riddles.

Have a go at the riddles below and let us know how many you got right.

1. How To Get A Dog, Cat & Mouse Across The River

A man has to take a dog a cat and a mouse across a river on a boat, he can only take one animal across at a time. If he takes the dog the cat will eat the mouse, if he takes mouse the dog will eat the cat.

How does he get the three animals across the river?

Answer
First he takes the cat over, then he goes back and takes the mouse over, he then takes the cat back with him and swaps it for the dog. This leaves the dog and mouse together (the dog won’t eat the mouse) while he goes to get the cat. Job done!

2. Who Killed The Kitten?

Once upon a time, there was a happy family who lived in a circular house, the family consisted of mum, dad, a chef, a maid, a brother, a sister and a small kitten called Cheryl.

Mum and dad went out one evening but, sadly, when they came back Cheryl the kitten had died.

Everyone was asked what they were doing that evening to find out who was responsible for the kitten’s demise.

The brother said he was watching TV with his sister, the sister confirmed this.

The maid said she busy all evening dusting the corners of the house.

The chef said he had spent the evening preparing a devon crab to make into a delicious Samundari Khazana Curry which he planned on serving the following night.

Who was responsible for the kitten’s death?

Answer
The maid – her story couldn’t have been true because there were no corners in the house – it was circular.

3. Amy’s Cats

Amy loves cats and has some as pets.

All but two of them are completely white.

All but two of them are completely black.

All but two of them are completely brown.

How many cats does Amy have?

Answer
3 – 1 white, 1 black, 1 brown

4. The Bridge Riddle

A girl, a horse and a cat came to a bridge. The girl rode her horse over the bridge, yet walked.

How is this possible?

Answer
The cat’s name is Yet.

5. Who Owns The Cat?

Which of the girls in the picture below is the cat’s owner?

Answer
The girl in the middle, you can tell from the cat damage to the front of her tights. Cats are less likely to scratch the back of your leg as this sort of behaviour is a cry for attention so they will usually approach from the front.

6. The Big Cat & The Little Cat Riddle

Two cats are sitting on a windowsill, a big cat and a little cat. The little cat is the son of the big cat, but the big cat is not the father of the little cat.

How is this possible?

Answer
The big cat is the mother.

7. What Is The Mothers Name?

I have a cat that has 3 kittens: Mopsy, Topsy & Spot.

What is the mother’s name

Answer
The mother’s name is What!

8. The St Ives Riddle

While on my way to St Ives I saw a man with 7 wives, each wife had 7 sacks, each sack had 7 cats and each cat had 7 kittens.

How many in total were going to St Ives?

Answer
Just one, the person telling the riddle was going to St Ives.

9. What Is It?

What is 3/7 chicken, 2/3 cat and 1/2 goat?

Answer
Chicago

3/7th of Chicken is CHI

2/3 of Cat is CA and

1/2 of goat is GO

So its Chi + ca + go = Chicago!

10. How Many Cats Are Needed?

If three cats catch three mice in three minutes, how many cats would be needed to catch 100 mice in 100 minutes?

Answer
Three

11. How Is This Possible Riddle

Three cats are walking in the same direction. The first cat has two cats behind him, the second cat has one cat behind him and one cat in front of him but the third cat has one cat in front of him and one behind him too.

How is this possible?

Answer
The cats are walking in a circle.

12. How Did The Cat Get Across The River?

A cat sniffed some catnip across the far side of the river and managed to cross the river without getting wet and without using a bridge or boat, how?

Answer
The river was frozen.

13. Which Side Of The Cat Riddle

Scientists have proven that one side of a cat has more fur than the other sides, they believe this is because when they lay on the floor they need more insulation on that side from the cold. Which side of a cat has the most fur?

Answer
The outside!

14. Short & Simple Cat Riddles

How does a cat stop a video?

Answer
She presses the ‘paws’ button.

How far can a cat run into the woods?

Answer
Halfway. If the cat runs further than halfway then she will be running out of the woods.

A cat can jump 5 feet high but can’t jump through a window that is 3 feet high, why not?

Answer
The window was closed.

What do you call a cat with two ears?

Answer
It doesn’t matter what you call him…he’ll come back when he feels like it!

What is the difference between a cat and a comma?

Answer
A cat has claws at the end of it’s paws but a comma has a pause at the end of its clause.

Why do cats make good soldiers?

Answer
Because they have 9 lives.
